My extended family was in the dining room enjoying dinner.

And as everyone finished their meals, the storytelling began.

My mother-in-law, Missy, told a story about her and my aunt Sarah. Within a few minutes, Sarah recounts the story differently.  And then my wife, Shay recounts it differently.

And this is where I learned to proactively listen.

A few years later, Stacey completes her interview with the VP of Manufacturing, Aaron for the Plant Manager role in an automotive supplier plant in northwest Ohio.

Stacey calls me for the debrief. She describes every detail of the conversation.

And I take notes. And I ask clarifying questions.

I then call Aaron, feeling pretty good about what I heard from Stacy. And we talk.

And I take notes and ask clarifying questions.

And it seems like I am at the dining room table with my family once again.

Same story but with different recollections.

I was able to connect the dots from the different versions and within twenty-four hours, Stacey accepts the offer from Aaron. They are both ecstatic. I did my job.

Today’s story was about proactive listening.

It was focused on one of the Three M’s  (mindset, motion, and mastering the skill).

Any ideas? Yes, you guessed it – mastering the skill.

This is one of the ways I help my clients make more placements.

Please join me on August 4th at 5:00 pm Eastern for a Best Practices on Interview Debriefs workshop.
