It’s Friday morning and I am excited to make a new friend.

I dial the phone for a meet and greet.

After the good mornings, and how are you’s, Jim starts to tell me about a project that he is working on.

And three minutes in I chime in with a comment of “sounds interesting.”

As I proactively listen, I take notes, and more notes, and soon I feel like I have been doing so for a while.

When I peek at the clock, so far it’s ten minutes into the call but it feels like an hour.

Jim has become a late night show host, like Johnny Carson, David Letterman, or Jimmy Fallon delivering the monologue.

 And ten minutes becomes fifteen.

And no pause or questions.

Finally!  At twenty-one minutes of the monologue, a question.

And I share a few ideas on how to look for and evaluate a partner. And we discuss.

At twenty-seven minutes into the call, he asks what my goals are.

And we share pleasantries as my next call is in a minute.

What an exhausting call.

Communication skills matter.

Clear and concise.

Ask questions to keep your audience engaged.

Don’t be like Jim. If you’d like to know the best practices on communicating through phone, email and social/messaging , send me an email so I can share a video with some useful tips.

Happy recruiting,

Mark
